 About Perception Modification

Perception Modification is a process to change the way an animal sees something. We can change things in any direction, but the two most common needs are to lead animals to become 1) less reactive or 2) less afraid. We lead animals to cope with stress and manage their emotions. We help animals solve their most dangerous and limiting behavior problems, like aggression, arousal, separation anxiety, and sound phobias.

We can use Perception Modification to solve most things that stem from an emotional response. Things like:

  • Anxiety
  • Hyperarousal
  • Hyperreactivity
  • Aggression
  • Phobias
  • Sound sensitivities
  • Separation anxiety
  • Fear of handling, grooming or veterinary procedures
  • Reactivity
  • We teach an animal to attain & maintain a calm mental state, on cue.
  •  We then introduce the trigger in very small pieces, below arousal threshold.
  • In progressive steps, we advance the intensity of the trigger.
  • The animal controls the advancement of the progressive steps. If he stays calm, they progress in a formulaic way. If he loses calm, the trigger freezes, and fades away. (The next step will start a few steps back from the step where he lost calmness.)
  • When the animal can maintain calmness regardless of the intensity of the trigger, we start the proofing process in other environments.

The PM Class (PMC) is for both dedicated pet owners and for professionals who work with animals. PMC gives the basic information needed to work through a single case, with 10 weeks of live support via Zoom weekly group classes with Kayce. PMC includes course materials, 10 live classes, and video submission, review and coaching for a single case.

 The PM Certification Course (PMCC) is for professionals and includes everything in the class, but gives additional information and support. It allows participants to work on multiple cases in class and also for video review of multiple cases. There are 10 additional weeks of support through live classes as well as live study sessions to help students prepare for the certification exam. Additional modules build understanding of Perception Modification, and go more in depth on how to use it to solve difficult cases. Online testing for certification is also included.

The class (PMC) is a prerequisite for PMCC and certification, and there is a price break when both PMC and PMCC are purchased together at the time of class registration.  However, anyone can take the class only (without taking the certification). If you purchase the class only, but later find you would like to upgrade to certification, you may do so, however you will have to pay the current full cost of the certification course, without the price break.

The Perception Modification Class (PMC) is recommended for both professionals who work with animals and for pet owners. Private owners with challenging pets should take the PM Class (PMC) for Pet Owners and work on solving their single case. Professionals who are working with client animals or shelter animals should take the PM Class (PMC) for Pet Pros.

We currently only accept professionals who work with animals to join the PM Certification Course (PMCC). Professional trainers, groomers, and shelter, kennel and daycare staff will likely find certification (PMCC) best meets their broader and deeper needs, with its additional information on case solutions, coaching, and deeper study with a goal of mastery.

From joining either the class or the certification course, participants gain bonus membership in the Perception Modification Trainer’s Site (PMTS).  The free membership offer spans 3 months with the class, and 1 year with the certification course. **This is a current special bonus for people enrolling during this launch, and is not guaranteed for future classes.**    

Meetings and presentations are done via Zoom, and replays with searchable transcripts are available for the live class calls. There are a series of lectures, discussion, video lessons and demos, video coaching, and other resources provided in an online learning center which can be accessed on a computer, smartphone or tablet. You can also access class materials through an app available on Apple or Android.

You will need a phone or camera to take and send videos of classwork. We provide information to help you do this. The class ‘Learning Center’ contains all study materials in an easy to access format, so you don’t have to worry about organizing these or keeping track of them.  

All live class calls are recorded and made available in class materials.

Each student must submit a BEFORE video, for the case they are planning to follow. The case "before video" is a short 2 minute or less video showing the behavioral issue the animal is struggling with that the student would like to address during the class. This video is taken before any Perception Modification techniques are learned or applied, as a starting point. Students will continue to record and submit video homework assignments throughout the course, which will be reviewed in our group discussions, in ‘real’ time, with coaching from Kayce.

Occasionally live real-time virtual training is offered as part of the live class call.

In order to apply for certification, the student must submit a series of case videos. This is comprised of 7 video assignments, showing critical accomplishments in the case. These videos are to demonstrate your skills in applying the PM techniques.

Certification is achieved if a student completes the certification exam with a score of 95% or higher, and submits all 7 case videos demonstrating appropriate skill level in applying the PM techniques taught throughout the class and certification course.

Video:  For Certification, participants must submit video demonstrating the appropriate skill level in applying techniques to achieve 7 critical steps necessary to teach the animal Perception Modification and solve the case problem.

Exam:  In addition to video submission, there is a written exam, administered online, which covers the information in the curriculum. Students are tested individually from the comfort of their homes. A score of 95% is required to gain certification, and with study, this is a very realistic goal. Participants must test if they wish to gain certification.

Test anxiety? No need to stress; we coach people through testing skills and test anxiety. It is also possible to reschedule tests if needed. There is limited flexibility, but we will work with participants as possible to support your goals and success!

If the participant wants the knowledge, coaching and study of the certification course but is not interested in obtaining certification, it is optional to sit for the certification exam. You can participate in the certification course, with approval, yet decline to take the exam.  

Post Certification:   After completion of the class or certification, participants are eligible to enroll in the membership site, Perception Modification Trainer’s Site (PMTS). Upon successful certification, participants will need to continue to apply skills and knowledge, and engage in ongoing activities to become fluent with these techniques, and to maintain currency and fluency.  The PMTS supports these goals and provides valuable community support.
